MG HS PHEV Review: Hybrid or Full EV? Real Truth Revealed!

The MG HS PHEV is a plug-in hybrid SUV and not a full EV, which means it has a combination of a petrol engine, an electric motor, and a battery.

It was showcased at the Auto Expo 2025 and is expected to arrive in India in 2025. The PHEV version offers an electric-only range of over 100 km and a combined power output of 284 horsepower.

JSW MG Motor India has unveiled the new HS PHEV at the ongoing Auto Expo 2025. The SUV is part of the brand’s global portfolio, and it joins the Cyberster, M9, ZS Hybrid+, and the new Magester.

The MG HS PHEV is a plug-in hybrid SUV and not a fully electric vehicle. It gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 21.4 kWh battery pack, producing a combined output of 272 PS and 350 Nm.

The PHEV has a range of over 100 km. It has a 12.3-inch touch screen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch driver display, and MG iSmart connected car technology.

Design & Style

The new generation HS is longer and wider than the previous model, but its height has decreased. It also has a slightly longer wheelbase. Boot space is bigger than the older model and stands at 507 liters.

  • The interior looks attractive with modern touches, including a dual-screen setup housed in one panel. The dashboard has a symmetrical, horizontal layout. MG has given it a new steering wheel with flat top and bottom end, a new gear stick, and soft materials throughout.
  • The HS PHEV comes with a host of features, such as a 12.3-inch touch screen infotainment system, 12.3-inch driver display, wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play, wireless phone charger, MG iSmart connected car tech, dual-zone AC, and power tailgate.
  • LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, up to 8 speakers, and four USB ports. Additionally, it offers a 360-degree camera, e-call system, electronic stability programmed with auto-hold (ESP), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), multiple airbags, and MG Pilot – a suite of driver assistance systems.

Engine & Performance

The 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is paired with a 21.4 kWh battery pack and an electric motor. The engine alone produces 143 PS and 230 Nm, while the electric motor produces 184 PS and 340 Nm.

The combined output is 272 PS and 350 Nm. It offers a top speed of 190 kilometers per hour. Notably, it offers an EV-only range of over 100 kilometers.

This range is similar to the new Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq plug-in hybrid models. A pure petrol power train is also on sale in select markets. The onboard charger includes a 6.6 kW,

Price & Variants

Although MG has not confirmed the launch of the HS PHEV in India, its India plan for 2025 also includes the introduction of PHEV in India. Hence, the chances of MG HS hitting the market are high.

If introduced, it will be priced around Rs 40-45 lakh (ex-showroom) and when launched, it will rival the Citroen C5 Air cross and the upcoming new Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan.
